Gourmet Decaf CoffeeToday, more people are enjoying the great taste of gourmet decaf coffee. Some people drink decaf to avoid all the caffeine, while other people drink the gourmet coffee simply because it is delicious. There are so many benefits to drinking decaf. For instance, for medical reasons some people just can't have caffeine in his or her diet. Some medical conditions such as diabetes, acid reflux, high blood pressure, and additional medical conditions could be the reason. However, caffeine in the diet can be a problem for some individuals. If caffeine is a problem for you, decaf is definitely a great alternative. There are several different variations and types that you can choose from as well. And while recent studies show more people are in fact choosing gourmet decaf coffees, greater methods are being taken to provide even better tasting varieties for consumers. Processes for Removing CafeineThere are effective ways of removing caffeine from coffee beans that offers consumers great coffee without all the caffeine, without removing the coffee taste. The oldest invention of doing this was in 1903, when Roselius used a combination of Benzene and salt water to soak coffee beans. This removed a large portion of the caffeine from the beans. However, over time this process has been eliminated because of health concerns from the Benzene, and the effect it had on the taste of the coffee. Still, another method often referred to as traditional style or the European method is used more recently. This method is accomplished by soaking the coffee beans in hot water. In some situations the coffee beans are steamed. Then a solvent of different solutions or chemicals is used to remove the caffeine. While this method is actually the most common, there are several other methods or processes used to remove caffeine from coffee beans. A process known as the Carbon Dioxide method is designed to bring the carbon dioxide to a liquid form using high pressure. The coffee beans are soaked in this solution. The best part about using this process is that it is considered safe for the environment and the consumer. The only problem with this process or method is the cost of reducing the carbon dioxide into the liquid form. Now, the purest form of removing caffeine from coffee beans is still yet another method that is known by many as the Swiss Water Process. Basically with this process, water is used instead of chemicals along with activated charcoal. This method also requires several forms of extractions of coffee beans. The only downside with this process is the loss of flavor from the coffee beans. The latest method of removing caffeine to essentially offer gourmet decaf coffee to consumers is a process, which includes green coffee beans being soaked in coffee and hot water. After this, the soaked coffee beans are placed into natural coffee flavored oils for several hours. This method is considered economical, and most of the coffee flavor is left for the consumer to enjoy. After all of the different methods or processes are in fact complete, unfortunately some caffeine is left in the coffee. Although, not being completely caffeine free gourmet decaf coffee is considered healthier to drink. For some consumers the overall taste of decaffeinated gourmet coffee isn't affected at all, while to others there is a distinct difference in taste. So, in all fairness the concept of whether taste is essentially affected is a matter of opinion. Statistically, researchers have found that the coffee taste is indeed altered. So, the difference between gourmet decaf coffee and gourmet coffee is of course the removal of most of the caffeine. But the actual word gourmet in definition means fine, exotic, extraordinary, or unique. Gourmet decaf coffee is referred to as a fine drink to consumers. The differences according to some studies are the simple factors that are placed in the process of making the coffee itself. One example is the way the coffee is brewed. A longer period of brewing the coffee alters the taste. In addition, the qualities of the coffee beans that are chosen affect the flavor of the coffee too. For instance, where the coffee beans are grown, the amount of time the coffee beans are allowed to grow, as well as other factors, all contribute to the taste of the decaf gourmet coffee as well. The ways the coffee beans are actually ground take a role in the overall flavor in addition. Some gourmet coffee shops all over the world today also have a variety of additional flavorings to put in with gourmet decaf coffee. This makes the coffee even better in a good tasting cup of coffee without caffeine. Decaf gourmet coffee has a unique taste and is considered unlike simple store bought coffee or fresh coffee beans ground. There have been several taste tests and researches done on gourmet decaf coffee versus gourmet coffee in general, and the results were essentially conclusive. Many consumers couldn’t tell the difference in the gourmet coffees that were decaffeinated. Coffee is considered as one of the leading drinks all over the world. This includes the coffee being served hot or cold. In essence, gourmet decaf coffee will probably cost a bit more; however consumers who love fine coffees don't see it as a price increase. Consumers look at it as a fine cup of great tasting gourmet decaf coffee instead. Recently it was found that coffee beans that were grown in North Africa in the Ethiopian region that are known as Arabica coffee beans, have a very low amount of caffeine. This might be the answer to reduced caffeine in coffee. And through alterations and research, perhaps there could be gourmet decaf coffee completely free of any caffeine at all. |
